Description of Light v Darkness

Light vs Darkness is the ultimate battle that humanity has created. Typically speaking, since ancient times humans have worshipped the light and feared the darkness. They believed that the light was good, and the darkness was evil. They created stories and myths to go along with this notion, and ever since, humanity has always related its issues to this archetype. If something occurred that couldn't be explained, then it must have been supernatural forces, or light and darkness, at work. They always represented their god by light, and their god's adversary by darkness. Anywhere one looks in human literature and creation, they will see this archetype, as it is as old as our species itself.

Examples from Literature and Film

Everywhere you look, you will find light v darkness in literature and film. It is the most general archetype of them all.

  1. The Bible - For Christians, this is the greatest form of literature, and it is all about good v evil, or heaven vs hell, or light v darkness.
  2. The Inheritance Series - It the books Eragon and Eldest, the evil ruler, Galbatorix, is represented by darkness, hence his black dragon.
  3. Star Wars - George Lukas made his series all about the battle of light v darkness. There is even the light side and the dark side in his story, and the light side is good and the dark side is evil.

Art Work

Light v Darkness is a very large and general archetype that includes many other archetypes as sub-archetypes. Among these are the Shadow, the Creator, Good v Evil, Heaven v Hell, the Tower, the Hero, and the Trickster. There are many others, but these are the most closely related to the constant battle of Light v Darkness.

An example of a battle of Light v Darkness is Spiderman 3, with Peter Parker's inner battle between good and evil, or light against darkness.

The yin yang symbol shows the constant balance of light and darkness within the world, and also shows that all light has darkness within it, and vice versa.

George Lukas based his Star Wars series off the constant battle between dark and light. In the above picture, the two great forces are clashing in a brilliant battle.

We are all familiar with the ancient battle between God and Satan, whether we choose to believe it or not. Once again, its the forces of good against the forces of evil, or light vs darkness.

Music

Many artists base their songs over the battle of light versus darkness. These two powers are usually metaphorically represented within the lyrics.

"The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by Charlie Daniels Band

The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind: he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came across this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot.
And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: "Boy let me tell you what:
"I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
"And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
"Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the devil his due:
"I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cos I think I'm better than you."
The boy said: "My name's Johnny and it might be a sin,
"But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cos I'm the best that's ever been."

Johnny you rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard.
'Cos hells broke loose in Georgia and the devil deals it hard.
And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold.
But if you lose, the devil gets your soul.

The devil opened up his case and he said: "I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his fingertips as he resined up his bow.
And he pulled the bow across his strings and it made an evil hiss.
Then a band of demons joined in and it sounded something like this.

When the devil finished, Johnny said: "Well you're pretty good ol' son."
But if you'll sit down in that chair, right there, and let me show you how its done."
Fire on the moun, run boys, run.
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun.
Chicken in the bread pin, pickin' out dough.
"Granny, does your dog bite?"
"No, child, no."

The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat.
He laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Johnny's feet.
Johnny said: "Devil just come on back if you ever want to try again."
I told you once, you son of a #@*!$, I'm the best that's ever been."

And he played fire on the mount, run boys, run.
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun.
Chicken in the bread pin pickin' out dough.
"Granny, does your dog bite?"
"No, child, no."

"The Great Darkness" by Arch Enemy

A greater darkness, my mind’s possessed
Disillusioned, numb emptiness
(No hope) I feel a paralyzing fear
(No salvation) faking control
Their coldness hurt me beyond belief

DOMINUS BEO SPIRITUS

Will I burn?
Will I be free?
The great darkness consumed my soul

DIABOLUS LIBERO SPIRITUS

Blind my eyes, I hate the light
Despair, frustration, regret
Fighting – fighting for what?
Lies, your lies – I feel dead inside
My pain is all I leave behind

A shadow – the only light I followed
Transparent I am – like a ghost

A far cry from whom I wanted to be
I never found my place, my place nor peace

"Serpents of the Light" by Deicide

Free of their god, intelligence won
Go with your instinct to live as you want
No longer begging for mercy from thieves
They can't come near you, through them you can see
Keep to the outside the teachings of christ
Denounce the father, undo his disguise
DIE!!!!!!!!!!!! SERPENTS OF THE LIGHT

You are at one, the serpent now gone
Harness the power to refuse the son
Under the bible inherit deceit
Above it enlighten to what you can be
Savor the pleasure once known in your life
Heaven's compassion you know is a lie
SERPENTS OF THE LIGHT

Serpents of the light, return to where you hide
GIVE US PEACE OF MIND!!
Serpents of the light, revolting parasite
THORNS IN PARADISE!!
Serpents of the light, expelled from human life
FREE OF JESUS CHRIST!!

Subcategories

There are several subcatagories within Light v Darkness. Some examples of these are the hero, the shadow, the tower, heaven v hell, and good v evil. Each has aspects within it that relates it to light v darkness.

  1. The Hero - Represents the lighter side of the world. He/she always does good within the world. A great example is Luke Skywalker from the Star Wars series. He is using the Force (the light side) to fight the Sith (the dark side).
  2. The Shadow - Goes hand-in-hand with the devil figure. This is the worthy opponent to the hero. He/she is fighting for the dark side of life. Again with the Star Wars example, Darth Vader is fighting for the dark side. He is also clad completely in black, which is a good representation of a shadow.
  3. The Tower - This is the stronghold of evil, or the dark side of life. This is the quote unquote hideout of the evil figure. In Star Wars, this is the Death Star.
  4. Heaven v Hell - These are the dwellings of the primordial forces within the world. In the Christian faith, God is represented by light, and the Devil is represented by darkness. This is the greatest battle within the world, and it all comes down to the battle between light and darkness.
  5. Good v Evil - Closely related to heaven v hell. Light has always been represented by the good in the world, and darkness as evil.
